The brief
Northern Tec recently completed the installation of a tethered Sync Energy smart EV charger for a homeowner in Blackpool.
The customer wanted a proper home-charging point to replace the portable three-pin lead they had been relying on since taking delivery of their electric car. Charging overnight from a standard socket was slow, and trailing the lead across the driveway had become a daily nuisance.
They also wanted the charger positioned close to where they park, with a tidy cable route that would sit comfortably against the outside of the property.
Our solution
After assessing the incoming supply, the existing consumer unit and the available earthing arrangement, our team recommended a 7kW tethered Sync Energy charger.
A tethered charger has its charging cable permanently attached, which suits drivers who charge most days. The customer can park, unwind the cable and plug in, with no separate lead to fetch from the boot and nothing to store afterwards.
The charge point was supplied from its own dedicated EV circuit with the appropriate protective devices, and our electricians planned the cable route carefully to keep containment minimal and the finish neat.
Testing, certification and handover
Once installed, the circuit and charge point were fully inspected, tested and commissioned in line with BS 7671 and the requirements for electric vehicle charging installations.
We then helped the customer connect the charger to its smart controls and showed them how to schedule charging around lower-cost off-peak electricity periods on their tariff.
The DNO notification was submitted by Northern Tec, so the customer had nothing to arrange themselves.
The result
The homeowner now has a reliable, weather-rated charging point that fills the car overnight on their own driveway, at a fraction of the cost of public rapid charging.
